My mother and I trotted off to the movie theater yesterday to see “The Devil Wears Prada,” which is supposed to be fantastic despite the book it was adapted from, but the theater was closed because of a power outage.  Luckily, Borders was right next-door, and I left with a pile of books as my mother rolled her eyes.

John Higgs’s top ten psychedelic non-fiction.  It’s pretty much what you’d expect, I think.

John Irving and Stephen King beg JK Rowling not to kill off Harry.  Wouldn’t you think they of all people would understand how futile this is if she’s already planning to?  And to think I had so much respect for Mr. Irving (King’s ship has already sailed).

Helena Bonham Carter is going to play Bellatrix Lestrange in the next Harry Potter movie.  …So maybe this one won’t suck quite so much?

I loved Jack Nicholson but, believe it or not, I could actually see Heath Ledger as the Joker, bizarre though it may sound.  And I was so excited about Christian Bale playing Batman in the last movie, but I’m not sure it really worked for me.  I know Katie Holmes didn’t.

The great American novel doesn’t exist—except in the minds of marketers (and those who believe New Yorkers write the best books). Birnbaum talks to Susan Straight about regional writing, as American as apple pie.

The Metamorphosis revisited.

More reviews are coming, but in the meantime I’ve been tagged!  I feel pretty!  Give me some time to collect my thoughts and I’ll put up a response later today.

  1. I love Helena Bonham Carter. She will make a good Bellatrix. I hope they let her hair be wild and curly.

  2. i read about them begging not to kill harry. methinks it’s better to go out in a blaze of glory saving the world than going forward as a pimply teen with a powerful wand.

i can see heath ledger as the joker, totally. i thought christian bale was excellent, though. i even liked gary oldham in “batman begins” or whatever it was called…
